KAMPALA, Uganda –– The Electoral Commission (EC) has issued a strong condemnation following a series of violent confrontations during the ongoing election campaigns, including a fatal incident that resulted in the death of one person and injuries to others.

In a press statement released today, the Commission’s Chairperson, Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon, expressed deep concern over the clashes, which have involved candidates, their agents, supporters, and law enforcement officers.

The Commission specifically highlighted “violent episodes on Friday, 28th November, 2025,” describing the loss of life as “unfortunate and regrettable.” The statement emphasized that such acts of violence “do not add value to our democratic dispensation.”

This condemnation comes against the backdrop of what the Commission described as a largely peaceful electoral exercise nationwide. The current cycle involves a massive pool of over 83,000 candidates vying for more than 45,000 positions, from local Sub-county councillors to the President.

In response to the incidents, the EC has called for a thorough investigation to “establish the root causes” and ensure that “culprits are held accountable in accordance with relevant laws.”

Justice Byabakama reiterated a call for peace, urging all stakeholders including candidates, their agents, and supporters—to conduct themselves within the law. The statement further implored political actors to “desist from using sectarian language that sows hatred, incites violence and provokes confrontation.”

Acknowledging the role of security forces, the Commission also directed law enforcement agencies to “ensure there’s compliance with electoral laws and guidelines,” advising them to apply “necessary means that are commensurate to the prevailing circumstances.”
