Dr. Robert Kakuru has secured another term as the Chairman of the Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA), reaffirming his commitment to advocating for the welfare of academic staff at Makerere University.
Announced by MUASA’s electoral Chairman, Dr. Anthony Tibaingana, Kakuru’s re-election, along with his entire executive, was uncontested. The circular, dated February 13th, 2023, confirmed the nomination of Kakuru and other members of the MUASA Core Executive Committee for the term 2024-2026.
Kakuru’s tenure as MUASA Chairman began in 2022, succeeding Dr. Deus Kamunyu Muhwezi. Throughout his first term, Kakuru has been vocal in addressing issues affecting academic staff, often engaging with the university council and management on matters such as staff tribunal reinstatement and promotion of academic staff.
Under Kakuru’s leadership, MUASA has advocated for salary harmonization with counterparts in other public universities, aiming to address disparities in compensation for staff with similar qualifications. Additionally, the association has pursued equity in the payment of staff gratuity.
Despite occasional clashes with university management, Kakuru’s unwavering stance against injustice and dedication to MUASA’s objectives have garnered support from colleagues, leading to his re-election.
Addressing concerns about potential conflicts between his role as MUASA Chairman and personal career progression, Kakuru remains optimistic about resolving any issues with the university management. He believes that his continued engagement with the management and council will ultimately lead to a resolution.
