Kinyara Sugar Works, located in Masindi district, has launched its annual primary school quiz competitions. The initiative, held at the company’s main complex, saw three out of ten participating schools emerge as winners.
Benard Erebu, the human resource manager for Kinyara Sugar Works, described the competition as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities. The company has a history of supporting schools in the areas where they operate to enhance academic standards.
Under this new scheme, selected schools will participate in the annual event, and the best-performing schools will receive cash prizes. The quiz competitions provide students with an opportunity to interact with their peers and exchange ideas, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
Kabango Primary School, which excelled in the quiz, expressed its gratitude for the competition. However, the head teacher, Evelyn Katusiime, highlighted the challenges faced by schools in sugarcane-growing areas. She appealed to Kinyara’s management to consider increasing the monthly allowance for teachers, which currently stands at 12,000 shillings.
For the past 15 years, Kinyara has been contributing this monthly payment to every teacher working in the areas where they operate, in addition to their government salary. Over 17 primary schools in Masindi district benefit from this scheme.
Arnold Walukamba, the corporate communications manager for Kinyara, revealed that the company allocates over 54 million shillings each financial year to support community schools. In addition to financial support, they have also been involved in opening access roads to some schools and recently undertook the repair of Kinyara Sugar Works Primary School, which had suffered damage from the wind.
