Fire Guts Katwe Market in Kampala, Traders Count Heavy Losses

Kampala, Uganda — Traders at Katwe Market are counting heavy losses after a devastating fire broke out late Sunday night, destroying several market stalls and goods worth millions of shillings.

The blaze reportedly started around midnight and quickly spread through sections of the busy market, razing wooden kiosks, small workshops, and merchandise stored by traders. Eyewitnesses said the fire intensified rapidly due to the highly flammable structures commonly used in informal markets.

Among the affected traders is Nusurah Nayiga, who lost about 60 sacks of charcoal in the inferno, while another vendor, Sarah Nansubuga, said her entire stock of vegetables was reduced to ashes.

The Uganda Police Force Fire Brigade responded to the scene and worked through the night to contain the flames and prevent them from spreading to nearby buildings. Authorities confirmed that no deaths or injuries were reported.

Local leaders and traders suspect the fire could have been caused by faulty electrical wiring, although others believe sabotage cannot be ruled out. Police have since launched investigations to establish the exact cause of the incident.

The fire has once again raised concerns about safety standards in crowded urban markets where wooden structures, poor electrical connections, and limited firefighting equipment often make such places vulnerable to devastating fires.

Affected traders are now appealing to the government and well-wishers for support to help them recover their businesses and livelihoods.

Katwe Market has previously experienced similar incidents, prompting calls for stronger enforcement of safety regulations and improved infrastructure to prevent future disasters.
