MBALE, Uganda – The State Minister for Gender in charge of Culture, Hon. Peace Regis Mutuuzo, has assured the Bamasaba community that the tenure of Umukuka III began in 2023 and will run until 2028.
Hon. Mutuuzo made the remarks while officiating at the Bugisu Cultural Symposium, an event that brought together thousands of Bamasaba from across the country and abroad.
“As the Gender Ministry, we cannot gazette another Umukuka until 2028,” the Minister stated. She added that the Ministry is aware that the Umukuka position is rotational, and the current term must be respected until its conclusion.
Steven Masiga, the spokesperson of the Bugisu Cultural Institution, told this publication that the Minister’s message was well received by the thousands of Bamasaba who gathered at Mbale Resort Hotel to celebrate the occasion.
The symposium also marked the second anniversary of Umukuka III’s reign, having assumed office in 2023. The event was graced by Bamasaba from all walks of life, as well as international guests from the United States, Zambia, and Indonesia.
Masiga noted that several cultural leaders from across Uganda were in attendance, including representatives from the Teso and Buruli cultural institutions, along with delegations from other brotherly cultural groups within and beyond Uganda.
