Jigger Outbreak Hits Amuru Villages, Over 40 Residents Affected

Residents of Jimo and Abye villages in Parabongo Parish, Lamogi Sub-county in Amuru District are battling a jigger infestation that has left dozens in pain and discomfort.

The outbreak, which has persisted for about two weeks, has affected at least 47 people, according to Lamogi Sub-county chairperson Atkinson Ojara. Both children and adults are among the victims.

Nancy Ajok, a resident of the area, shared her distress on February 11, 2026, saying the infestation has badly damaged her toes as well as those of her two children, making it difficult for them to walk and carry out daily activities.

Amuru District Health Officer Dr. Alfred Okello said his office had not yet received an official report about the situation but acknowledged that jigger infestations spread rapidly, especially during the dry season.

He explained that jiggers are caused by sand fleas that burrow into the skin—commonly on the feet—where they feed and lay eggs. This results in painful wounds that can lead to serious secondary infections such as tetanus if left untreated.

Dr. Okello noted that the most at-risk groups include children aged 5 to 14 who often walk or play barefoot, the elderly who may face hygiene challenges, and persons with disabilities who require additional care.

Health teams are now being dispatched to the affected villages to assess the magnitude of the infestation and roll out response and prevention measures aimed at stopping further spread.
