Yoweri K Museveni, the President of Uganda, recently attended a celebration of the 50th wedding anniversary of Rt. Hon. Amama Mbabazi and his wife Jacqueline Mbabazi. The event brought together family, friends, and comrades to express gratitude for their enduring commitment. President Museveni extended his congratulations, acknowledging the Mbabazis’ role in Uganda’s political landscape.

President Museveni emphasized the significance of Amama Mbabazi’s five decades of marriage amidst the challenges of Uganda’s resistance struggle. He highlighted Mbabazi’s dedication to the cause of freedom fighting, despite the personal risks involved. Mbabazi’s support, particularly from his wife Jacqueline, played a crucial role in various operations, contributing to the growth of the resistance movement.

The President underscored Mbabazi’s contributions to Uganda’s history, noting his involvement in pivotal moments such as the formation of FRONASA. Mbabazi’s efforts were instrumental in nurturing skilled soldiers and cadres, ultimately shaping the course of Uganda’s political trajectory.

However, alongside praise, critics also voiced their concerns. Toko Godwin questioned the direction Uganda was heading in under Mbabazi’s tenure as Prime Minister, raising issues of corruption, nepotism, and human rights abuses. These criticisms reflect broader discontent within Ugandan society.

The Opposition NUP UK Chapter condemned President Museveni and the ruling elite, accusing them of neglecting the welfare of vulnerable communities, particularly those affected by Nodding Syndrome in Northern Uganda. They criticized the lavish spending on celebrations while basic social services remain inadequate for those in need.

Moreover, the NRM ministers and officials hailing from affected regions were singled out for prioritizing personal interests over the needs of their constituents. This failure to address pressing issues highlights a disconnect between the political elite and the people they are meant to serve.
