Mbarara Speaker Seat Race Heats Up as Salima Challenges Tashobya

MBARARA, Uganda — The contest for the next Speaker of Mbarara City Council is gaining momentum, with two prominent political figures emerging as key contenders.

Incumbent Speaker Bonny Tashobya Karusya, who has held the position since 2016, is seeking to retain his seat amid a growing challenge from Marina Salima, the elected woman councillor representing Mbarara City South, covering Kakoba and Katete divisions.

The race is shaping up as a closely watched political contest, given the influence both candidates hold within local governance circles.

Tashobya brings nearly a decade of experience to the role, having overseen council proceedings and legislative business since Mbarara attained city status. His leadership has positioned him as a central figure in the city’s political landscape.

On the other hand, Salima is steadily building support, leveraging her role as a councillor and her growing reputation in city politics. Her entry into the race signals a potential shift in leadership dynamics within the council.

Both candidates are also active members of the Uganda Urban Council Speakers Association, a national platform that brings together speakers from urban authorities across the country. Within the association, Tashobya serves as chairperson, while Salima holds the position of vice chairperson, further highlighting their prominence in the sector.

As the contest intensifies, political observers say the outcome could shape the direction of leadership and governance in Mbarara City in the coming term.
