12th Parliament Set to Elect Leadership as Support Grows for Among, Tayebwa

KAMPALA, Uganda — As Members of the 12th Parliament of Uganda prepare to elect the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, support is mounting for the re-election of Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among as Speaker and Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa as Deputy Speaker.

Advocates for the two leaders point to their tenure in the 11th Parliament, describing it as a period marked by strengthened oversight, legislative productivity, and institutional stability.

Under their leadership, Parliament passed key legislation aimed at supporting women, youth, and vulnerable groups, while reinforcing its constitutional mandate to hold the Executive accountable.

Supporters credit Rt. Hon. Anita Among with advancing women’s empowerment initiatives and championing laws addressing gender-based violence. She is also recognized for promoting bipartisan engagement within the House and enhancing Uganda’s parliamentary diplomacy at regional and international levels.

Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, who has served as Deputy Speaker, is praised for his management of plenary proceedings and his role in supporting legislative reforms. Observers note his efforts in encouraging youth participation in governance and maintaining efficiency during parliamentary business.

Those backing the pair argue that their experience, institutional knowledge, and collaborative leadership approach position them strongly to guide the 12th Parliament as it embarks on a new legislative term.

The election of parliamentary leadership is expected to be a defining moment for the incoming House, as Members determine the direction and tone of Uganda’s legislative agenda in the years ahead.
