Mbarara City, Uganda — The recently rehabilitated Katete Bridge in Mbarara City, which cost Shs366 million and was completed by the UPDF Engineering Brigade last year, is reportedly showing serious signs of deterioration, raising concerns among residents and local leaders.

The bridge, which links Mbarara City Center to Katete Town and parts of Isingiro District, was reopened in 2025 after 10 months of closure for renovations. At the time, the project was praised for its timely completion and the expected boost it would bring to transportation and economic activity in the region.

However, locals have expressed dissatisfaction, questioning whether the renovation justifies the budget allocation.
Residents claim that only 32 iron plates, accompanying nuts, and 86 pieces of timber were used in the rehabilitation, which they estimate would cost no more than Shs50 million, far below the reported Shs366 million.

Residents have accused Lord Mayor Robert Kakyebezi of colluding with the UPDF to approve what they describe as poor-quality renovation, sparking outrage among commuters who use the bridge daily.

“This bridge looks like it has spent years without maintenance,” said one frequent commuter, criticizing both the city authorities and the UPDF Engineering Brigade.

Alternative routes, such as Kanyeyite Bridge, which could reduce traffic pressure on Katete Bridge, remain inadequate, as some lack proper infrastructure.
