The Bufumbira North Member of Parliament, John Nizeyimana Kamara, in partnership with Uzima Chicken Company Limited, has launched a chicken-rearing campaign aimed at improving the living standards of residents in Kisoro District.
The initiative focuses on rearing Sasso First-Generation dual-purpose chickens, a breed known for both meat and egg production. The project seeks to reduce the district’s dependence on imported poultry products by promoting local chicken production and income generation within the community.
Founded in 2010 in Ethiopia, Uzima Chicken Company Limited expanded to Uganda in 2017 and reached Kisoro District in 2018. As of 2025, the company supplies over 2,000 chicks in Kisoro, with plans to increase the number to 20,000 by next year. The partnership with MP Kamara is expected to accelerate these efforts.
Speaking as the guest of honour during a one-day workshop held at New Montana Guest House in Kisoro Municipality, Kamara praised the initiative as a step toward commercialized and development-oriented poultry farming through community sensitization.
Arihona Emmanuel, the Uzima Sales Manager for Kisoro, Rubanda, Kanungu, and Rukungiri districts, said the main goal is to expand the market beyond borders and uplift farmers’ living standards.
He urged poultry farmers to adopt modern feeding practices and use treated feeds to minimize chicken diseases.
Ndawe Harbert, Uzima’s district agent based in Nyarusiza Subcounty, expressed optimism that reducing chicken imports would significantly benefit local communities by keeping income within the district.
Meanwhile, Habiyaremye Tadeo, the Kisoro District Animal Husbandry Officer, pledged to work closely with poultry farmers to tackle existing challenges, particularly those related to vaccination against common poultry diseases.
Habiyaremye encouraged the public to embrace chicken rearing, describing it as cost-effective, manageable, and suitable for all households.
