Today marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing 19th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit, as President Yoweri Museveni officially takes over the chairmanship from Azerbaijan.
Several leaders have touched down at Entebbe International Airport to attend the summit. Some of the notable figures include Vice-President William Ruto (Kenya), President Salva Kiir Mayardit (South Sudan), and Prime Minister Édouard Ngirente (Rwanda), among others.
Yesterday, Uganda and Uzbekistan signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to establish diplomatic relations. Uzbekistan is set to chair the Non-Aligned Movement in the years 2027-2029.
In a bilateral meeting held on the sidelines of the summit, Uganda’s foreign affairs minister, Gen. (rtd) Jeje Odongo, engaged with Kim Son Gyong, the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs and Special Envoy of The Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea.
The day’s program includes various formalities and addresses during the morning session. Highlights include President Aliyev’s report on NAM activities from 2019 to 2024, the official transfer of the chair from Azerbaijan to Uganda, President Museveni’s inaugural address, and addresses from Cuba’s Vice-President Salvador Valdés Mesa and other dignitaries.
