KAMPALA – The Parliamentary Committee on Physical Infrastructure has summoned the Minister of Works and Transport, Fred Byamukama, to explain the increasing number of road accidents and the growing number of stalled road construction projects across the country.
The committee wants the minister to provide answers on the factors contributing to the continued rise in road crashes and outline measures being taken by the government to improve road safety.
Lawmakers are expected to examine issues including road user safety, traffic enforcement, the condition of roads, and the effectiveness of current interventions aimed at reducing fatalities.
The committee will also question the ministry over contractors who have abandoned road projects in different parts of Uganda, leaving several infrastructure developments incomplete.
Members of Parliament are expected to seek explanations on why some contractors stopped work, the status of affected contracts, challenges affecting implementation, and the steps being taken to ensure stalled projects are completed.
Road infrastructure remains a key component of Uganda’s development agenda, with billions of shillings invested in expanding connectivity, improving transportation and supporting trade across the country.
However, some projects have faced delays due to rising construction costs, contractual disputes, supervision challenges and other implementation setbacks.
The minister’s appearance before the committee is expected to give lawmakers an opportunity to assess the management of road safety programmes and review how taxpayer-funded infrastructure projects are being implemented.
The committee says the engagement will help identify challenges affecting the transport sector and recommend measures to improve accountability, road safety and timely completion of government projects.
