Kampala, Uganda — Engineer Ronald Nsubuga Balimwezo has officially assumed office as the new Kampala Lord Mayor following a swearing-in ceremony held at City Hall, marking the beginning of a new political administration for Uganda’s capital city.
The ceremony, presided over by senior officials from the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), saw Balimwezo formally declared the duly elected Lord Mayor before receiving the official seal and instruments of power, signaling the lawful transfer of authority.
The event attracted political leaders, city officials, supporters, and members of the public who gathered at City Hall to witness the historic transition in Kampala’s top political office.
Balimwezo’s assumption of office officially brings to an end the leadership era of former Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, who served the city for several terms and remained one of Kampala’s most influential political figures.
The newly sworn-in Lord Mayor now begins a five-year term running from 2026 to 2031.
In his first remarks after taking office, Balimwezo pledged to prioritize reforms aimed at improving urban infrastructure, drainage systems, garbage management, and traffic flow within the city.
He described Kampala as a rapidly growing city facing serious urban challenges that require what he called “decisive and practical leadership.”
“We must restore order, improve service delivery, and modernize the city to meet the demands of a growing urban population,” Balimwezo said shortly after taking oath.
The ceremony concluded under heavy security deployment around City Hall as supporters from different political camps gathered outside to celebrate the transition.
The development marks the start of a new political chapter for Kampala, with residents now watching closely to see how the new administration will tackle persistent city problems that have affected the capital for years.
