The Uganda Police Traffic Directorate has confirmed the detention of a coaster driver who was caught dangerously overloading passengers on his vehicle.
The incident involved a coaster registration number UBP 991U, which was traveling from Pallisa to Kampala late at night. According to SP Michael Kananura, the spokesperson for the Traffic Police, the vehicle was intercepted at the Jinja New Nile Bridge checkpoint after a concerned passenger onboard raised an alarm.
Upon inspection, officers discovered that the driver had placed extra chairs in the corridor of the vehicle. This allowed passengers in excess of the legal capacity to travel, creating a serious risk to their safety.
“This case is a clear reminder that road safety is a collective responsibility,” SP Kananura said. He commended the passenger who reported the matter and encouraged others to do the same whenever they notice dangerous practices on the road.

The Traffic Police emphasized that overloading is one of the major causes of road accidents in Uganda, as it compromises both driver control and passenger safety. Authorities urged transport operators to strictly follow capacity limits and ensure vehicles are roadworthy before setting off.
“We call upon all passengers and members of the public to continue playing an active role in ensuring safety on our roads. Let us stay vigilant and committed to saving lives,” Kananura added.
The detained driver is expected to face charges related to reckless endangerment and violation of traffic regulations.
