NRM Membership Register Update Ongoing, Few Turn Up in Luwero
The National Resistance Movement (NRM) party’s effort to update its membership register has commenced in Luweero district, but with a noticeable lack of participation from residents.
Running from Wednesday, March 13th, to Sunday, March 17th, 2024, the update aims to enlist new supporters aged 16 and above while also updating the particulars of existing members.
In Luwero, however, the initiative began with a modest turnout, with reports indicating missing names from the registers of 17 villages.
Margaret Nakanjako Meeme, the NRM Registrar for Kasoma zone in Luwero town, reported that by midday, approximately 200 out of 600 registered voters had shown up to update their details, with only five new members registering.
Despite the turnout, Nakanjako expressed optimism, anticipating increased participation in the following days.
Conversely, in Kalongo zone, Sudat Nabukeera, the NRM village registrar, noted that only nine new members had been registered by midday, and the village’s register lacked any existing names, necessitating a fresh registration process.
George William Namugera, NRM Chairperson of Kakookolo village, reported 15 new members registered and 13 out of 409 existing members checking their particulars. He urged the NRM Party Secretariat to enhance publicity through local channels to attract more registrations.
David Kamugisha, the Luwero District NRM Registrar, deemed the initial phase largely successful, with plans to augment participation in the forthcoming days. He acknowledged reports of missing member names in 17 villages, directing registrars to conduct fresh registrations.
Kamugisha also addressed an instance where a village’s register had not been delivered, prompting communication with the secretariat for immediate delivery to facilitate registrations.
Emphasizing the importance of the exercise, Kamugisha urged supporters to update their particulars, including age, as this data would be crucial for special interest group elections.
Despite the challenges, NRM Deputy Secretary General Rosemary Namayanja visited Gombe A zone in Nansana municipality, Wakiso district, and Agakhan in Kampala Central Division to assess the progress. She expressed encouragement at the turnout and urged members nationwide to actively participate within the designated five-day period.
