RUBANDA, UGANDA — The Rubanda District LC5 Chairperson, Stephen Ampeire Kasyaba, has urged farmers to adopt improved farming practices to help control the fast flow of water from hillsides following heavy rains that have affected several communities.
Kasyaba made the call while distributing 5 kilograms of maize flour to residents affected by the recent heavy rains in Kashekyera Ward in Ruhija Town Council and Kivunga Ward in Nshanjare Town Council, located in Rubanda West Constituency.
He encouraged farmers to adopt better land management and farming techniques in order to reduce soil erosion and the rapid movement of runoff water from the hills.
Kasyaba also tasked agricultural officers in the district with mentoring farmers on modern and sustainable farming practices. At the same time, he urged local leaders to compile a comprehensive report on the losses caused by the heavy rains to support efforts to lobby for additional food relief.
The district leadership has already dispatched road equipment to repair roads damaged by the rains in the affected areas.
Meanwhile, Neverine Tusasiibwe, the Female LC5 Councillor representing Ruhija Sub-county and Town Council, echoed the call for improved farming practices to prevent similar disasters in the future.
Residents who received the relief aid expressed concern about the damage caused by the heavy rains, saying several gardens and water wells had been washed away. Some victims also questioned what further intervention the government would provide to help affected families recover.
