President Yoweri Museveni has called on members of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) to maintain party unity and uphold electoral integrity ahead of the 2026 polls, using Rwampara as a key example.
Addressing a rally at Bujaga playgrounds on Monday afternoon, Museveni appealed to the electorate and party members to respect the decisions of the NRM electoral tribunal and avoid actions that could divide the party.
He specifically addressed independent candidate Molly Asiimwe, urging her to trust in God and support the party’s flag bearer, Anna Kansiime.
“As members of NRM, we must avoid division. Anyone who feels aggrieved should first present their case to the tribunal. If justice is not served there, evidence can be brought forward and handled properly with law enforcement. This ensures transparency and protects our party from internal conflict,” Museveni said.
Asiimwe had initially won the NRM primaries, but the party tribunal in August nullified her victory after finding that she had falsified results, which showed her defeating Kansiime by over 7,000 votes. The tribunal subsequently declared Kansiime the legitimate NRM flag bearer. Dissatisfied with this decision, Asiimwe has chosen to run as an independent candidate.
Museveni highlighted the role of faith in guiding ethical conduct within politics, particularly calling on Asiimwe to trust in divine providence rather than political maneuvering. “If you are a born-again Christian, trust in God. He will bless you in other ways if you respect the party’s decisions,” he said.
The President also used the occasion to remind residents of Rwampara of the broader contributions of the NRM government, noting that the region, once affected by conflict, is now fully peaceful. He praised the party’s role in fostering stability and unity across the country, emphasizing that the military and political systems operate without tribal or religious bias.
The rally underscored Museveni’s focus on party cohesion, electoral discipline, and development, as he urged constituents to continue supporting the NRM in the forthcoming elections.
