Speeding ambulance overturns, killing juvenile in Nakapiripirit

Nakapiripirit, Uganda — Police in Nakapiripirit District in the Karamoja sub-region are investigating a fatal road crash that occurred on Sunday, 5th July 2026, at approximately 10:15 hrs along the Tokora–Namalu Highway at Tokora Trading Centre in Nakapiripirit District.

According to eyewitnesses, an ambulance, registration number LG0019-085, a Toyota Land Cruiser belonging to Namalu Health Centre IV in Nakapiripirit District, was transporting a pregnant woman in labour to Tokora Health Centre IV for emergency medical care. Upon reaching Tokora Trading Centre, the driver encountered a low-bed truck belonging to Polatyo Road Construction Ltd that was offloading iron bars for drainage works.

The source explained that while the driver of the ambulance tried to manoeuvre past the obstruction, the ambulance knocked a pedestrian who was also trying to bypass the same truck.

Mr Michael Longole, the Mt Moroto Regional Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Cherop Kevin, an 8-year-old male juvenile and resident of Arengeseip Village, Nadip Parish, Tokora Sub-county in Nakapiripirit District.

He said the deceased was rushed to Tokora Health Centre IV, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

“Our traffic officers, led by No. 37342 Sgt Kamukama Erasmus, together with officers from Nakapiripirit and Tokora police stations, visited the scene and drew a sketch plan of the accident,” he said.

Mr Longole said a postmortem examination was conducted on the deceased, adding that the ambulance has been parked at Nakapiripirit Central Police Station for IOV inspection.

Meanwhile, Longole said the driver of the ambulance, Loyan Gabriel, 34, has been issued Police Form 94 and is currently on bond as inquiries continue.

According to him, preliminary findings indicate reckless driving as the possible cause of the accident.

Mr Longole urged all motorists, especially emergency vehicle drivers, to exercise extreme caution when approaching trading centres and road construction sites.

“Slow down, obey traffic signs, and be alert for pedestrians,” he cautioned.

He also appealed to construction companies to ensure proper signage and traffic guidance whenever road works are ongoing to protect lives.

He said the police extend their condolences to the family, relatives, and friends of the deceased. Inquiries into the crash are ongoing.
