Tanzania and Rwanda are poised to establish a new border post, marking a significant milestone in their efforts to deepen trade relations amidst evolving regional dynamics. This initiative aims to alleviate congestion at existing border points and facilitate smoother movement of people and goods between the two nations. The proposed border post will be situated in Tanzania’s Kyerwa district within the Kagera Region, providing an additional avenue for trade and travel and reducing pressure on the Rusumo border post.
During a four-day visit to Rwanda, Tanzania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, January Makamba, announced plans for the new border post, underscoring the commitment to fostering closer ties between the two countries. Emphasizing the importance of facilitating cross-border movement, Makamba expressed readiness to operationalize the Kyerwa border front, enhancing accessibility and promoting bilateral interactions.
Highlighting Tanzania’s dedication to expanding economic cooperation with Rwanda, Minister Makamba affirmed Tanzania’s role as Rwanda’s second-largest trading partner. He underscored ongoing collaborative ventures between the two nations, citing the Rwandan dairy factory in Mwanza as a testament to Tanzania’s pivotal role in facilitating Rwandan exports.
In response, Rwanda’s Minister of Trade and Industry, Jean Chrysostome Ngabitsinze, lauded the prospects presented by the new border post, emphasizing its potential to enhance economic opportunities and trade relations. Ngabitsinze reiterated the importance of joint efforts in addressing shared challenges and prioritizing initiatives that enhance the well-being of citizens from both countries.
The proposed border expansion received enthusiastic support from stakeholders, including Rwandan and Tanzanian truckers, who highlighted the potential benefits for cross-border commerce. The initiative forms part of broader measures aimed at fortifying trade ties and streamlining logistical operations between Tanzania and Rwanda, including the harmonization of levies to alleviate concerns raised by trucking communities.
