William Popp, the United States Ambassador to Uganda, has reaffirmed the commitment of the United States to provide financial assistance for healthcare initiatives in Uganda. This pledge is aimed at addressing epidemics and other healthcare challenges facing the country.

During his visit to Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital, Ambassador Popp reiterated the US government’s dedication to supporting healthcare projects in Fort Portal City. The purpose of his visit was to assess the progress and impact of initiatives funded by the United States in collaboration with local healthcare institutions.

Among the projects funded by the United States at the hospital are the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) and the Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) clinic, among others. These initiatives play a crucial role in enhancing healthcare delivery and responding to health emergencies within the region.

Dr. Alex Adaku, the Director of Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital, highlighted the vulnerability of the Rwenzori region to epidemics and the critical need for research and containment efforts. He emphasized the importance of ongoing support to strengthen the hospital’s capacity in managing such health crises effectively.

In response to Dr. Adaku’s concerns, Ambassador Popp affirmed the United States’ commitment to continue supporting the hospital, particularly through funding for the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC). The EOC, supported by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), serves as a vital hub for coordinating preparedness and response efforts against infectious diseases.

The CDC-funded EOC has been instrumental in developing coordination mechanisms for managing infectious diseases, including the COVID-19 pandemic. During the 2022 Ebola outbreak in Uganda, the EOC played a critical role in providing logistical support and coordinating response activities.

Ambassador Popp underscored the fundamental importance of healthcare in driving economic development and societal progress. He emphasized the need for collaborative endeavors between the United States and Uganda to address healthcare challenges effectively.

As the United States reaffirms its commitment to supporting healthcare initiatives in Uganda, Ambassador Popp’s visit underscores the enduring partnership between the two countries in advancing public health objectives.
