Police in Mitooma District have arrested a 45-year-old woman accused of subjecting her eight-year-old stepson to a shocking act of abuse by allegedly forcing him to swallow dozens of sewing needles over a two-week period.
The suspect, identified as Juliet Tushabeomwe, was taken into custody following reports that the child had been experiencing severe and persistent abdominal pain. Concerned about his deteriorating condition, the boy’s aunt, Eunice Birungi, intervened and sought medical attention.
The child was rushed to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, where doctors discovered multiple needles lodged in his body. He subsequently underwent a delicate surgical procedure to remove a total of 46 needles. Medical personnel say the boy is now recovering under specialized care.
Police confirmed the arrest, with the District Police Commander, Godfrey Achiria, stating that the suspect is being held on charges including attempted murder. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
The case has sparked widespread outrage among residents and child rights advocates, raising fresh concerns about the safety and welfare of children in blended families. Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspected cases of child abuse.
Officials say the suspect will be arraigned in court as investigations progress.
