KANUNGU, Uganda — A tragic incident has been reported at Rugyeyo Tea Factory in Rugyeyo Sub-county, Kanungu District, where a worker lost his life after falling from the factory roof.
Rugyeyo Tea Factory, which is operated by Kinkizi Development Company, is one of the key processing facilities in the area.
The deceased, identified as Lawrence Niwabine, a 47-year-old resident of Kichwamba Village in Rugyeyo Parish, was reportedly cleaning the roof on Monday, March 30, 2026, at around 7:45 a.m. when the incident occurred.
According to reports, Niwabine accidentally stepped on an iron sheet that gave way after the nails supporting it came loose, causing him to fall into the factory. A worker who spoke on condition of anonymity said Niwabine struck his head on metal structures during the fall, sustaining severe injuries that led to his instant death.
The Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson, Elly Maate, confirmed the incident, noting that officers responded to the scene and documented the case. He said the body was conveyed to Rugyeyo Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination before being handed over to the family for burial.
Police have urged factory management to prioritise worker safety by ensuring the provision of proper protective gear and strict adherence to safety guidelines to prevent similar incidents.
