KABALE, Uganda — A boys’ dormitory at Child Care Nursery and Primary School in Kabale District was severely damaged by fire on Monday night, though fortunately, no lives were lost.

The incident occurred at around 9:00 p.m. in Karukoba Cell, Ntarabana Parish, Buhara Sub-county, according to Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson.

Police were alerted by the school director, Innocent Mbeinenamukama, who reported the fire via telephone. A fire brigade team led by SP Muhanguzi Moses, with Sgt. Bikorwomuhangi Andrew as the driver, promptly responded to the scene.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the blaze had engulfed one of the rooms on the third floor, which served as the boys’ dormitory. Quick action by the team prevented the fire from spreading to the rest of the building and nearby structures.

Despite the swift response, the dormitory and its contents—including beds, mattresses, students’ clothing, and books—were extensively damaged. The estimated cost of the damage is approximately 30 million Ugandan shillings.

Preliminary investigations suggest that a short circuit may have sparked the fire, though authorities continue to probe the exact cause.

School staff, local residents, and the headteacher were present during the incident and witnessed the emergency response. Authorities have commended the fire brigade for their prompt action, which helped save the rest of the school and surrounding property. Police say inquiries into the incident are ongoing.
