STEVEN ARIONG: Investigate the Circumstances Behind Unopposed MPs and Ministers

Steven Ariong

As investigations continue into allegations involving former Speaker of Parliament Anita Among and some of her close associates, I believe authorities should also examine the circumstances under which some Members of Parliament and ministers were declared unopposed during the elections.

In my opinion, there are questions that deserve thorough investigation. It has been widely alleged that some politicians benefited from financial support linked to individuals now under scrutiny. If any public resources were misused to influence electoral outcomes, those responsible should be held accountable in accordance with the law.

Some of the leaders who are now serving as ministers or commissioners were declared unopposed. If there is evidence that financial influence or other improper means contributed to those outcomes, the relevant investigative agencies should establish the facts. Those who publicly speak against corruption should equally be willing to account for how they attained public office.

The challenges currently facing Anita Among should serve as a lesson to all public officials that leadership comes with responsibility and accountability. Public office should never be used to suppress opponents or for personal gain.

It has also been claimed that some MPs who once enjoyed close ties with Anita Among have since distanced themselves from her following the investigations. If true, this raises important questions about political loyalty and accountability.

I also note that the Iteso Cultural Leader recently led a delegation of MPs from Teso to visit Anita Among at her residence in Nakasero. It is my view that political relationships should not be influenced by financial considerations but should instead be guided by principles of integrity and public service.

I therefore call upon the relevant government agencies to impartially investigate any credible allegations relating to the declaration of unopposed candidates and any possible misuse of public resources during the electoral process. Such investigations should be evidence-based and conducted without fear or favour.

Ugandans deserve leaders who reach public office through transparent, lawful and democratic processes. Accountability should apply equally to everyone, regardless of their position or political affiliation.
