Wissa Makes History as Congo DR Hold Portugal

FT: Portugal 1-1 DR Congo

Yoane Wissa scored Congo DR’s first-ever FIFA World Cup goal as Les Leopards earned a historic 1-1 draw against Portugal in Group K at Houston Stadium.

Portugal took an early lead in the sixth minute when Joao Neves rose to head in Pedro Neto’s cross past Lionel Mpasi. Roberto Martinez’s side dominated the opening stages and appeared in control after their fast start.

Congo DR responded with courage and gradually grew into the match. Wissa came close after 10 minutes with a left-footed effort that curled narrowly wide of Diogo Costa’s goal.

The African side were rewarded in first-half stoppage time when Arthur Masuaku delivered a cross into the area and Wissa powered a header into the net. The goal was Congo DR’s first at the World Cup, 52 years after their previous appearance at the tournament in 1974.

Portugal thought they had regained the lead shortly after the restart when Joao Cancelo scored with an overhead kick, but the effort was ruled out for offside.

Congo DR continued to compete strongly in the second half, with Steve Kapuadi heading wide and Cedric Bakambu causing problems for Portugal’s defence. Cristiano Ronaldo also had chances for Portugal but was unable to find a winner.

Ronaldo made history of his own, becoming the oldest outfield player to start a World Cup match at 41 years and 132 days. It was also his 23rd World Cup appearance, moving him level with Paolo Maldini on the all-time list.

Wissa said the result reflected Congo DR’s character.

“I am very proud today because we worked extremely hard,” he said. “Scoring our first goal is a huge source of pride because it reflects the character of this team.”

Congo DR coach Sebastien Desabre praised his players for their discipline and commitment.

“They showed incredible commitment and selflessness,” Desabre said. “I am very proud of my players because they represented Congo in a very positive way.”

Portugal coach Roberto Martinez admitted his side lost fluency after their strong start but said the team could learn from the result.

The draw gives Congo DR their first World Cup point and leaves Portugal with work to do in Group K.
