The First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Museveni, has extended her condolences to the family of the late Mabel Kiggundu, a former chairperson of the national executive committee of the Uganda Women’s Effort to Save Orphans (UWESO). In her eulogy delivered by David Bahati, the state minister for trade, industry, and cooperatives, during a memorial service at Watoto Church, the First Lady praised Kiggundu’s exemplary leadership during her eight-year tenure from 2011 to 2019.
Kiggundu, aged 71, passed away on November 19, 2023, due to cardiac arrest. The memorial service was attended by dignitaries including Gen. David Muhoozi, Col. Edith Nakalema, and former minister Shem Bageine, as well as members of UWESO and the Watoto Church community.
In her message, the First Lady highlighted Kiggundu’s exceptional leadership qualities, emphasizing her effective management of UWESO and her success in fundraising through engagement with the donor community. She recognized Kiggundu’s commitment to her Christian faith, describing her as a devoted Christian who used the Bible as her guide and a source of strength.
The First Lady conveyed sympathy to Kiggundu’s family and acknowledged her significant contributions to UWESO, stating that Kiggundu had fought a good fight and finished the race. Pastor Martin Omondo of Watoto Church also eulogized Kiggundu, praising her as a vital member of the church for 29 years and commending her contributions to its growth.
Mabel Kiggundu, a Human Resource Specialist and founder of Empowad Ltd, was remembered for her involvement in capacity building for micro, small, and medium enterprises, particularly focusing on women entrepreneurs. Her children, friends, and fellow church members celebrated her life, describing her as a disciplined, prayerful, and wise individual who left a lasting impact.
The memorial service paid tribute to Kiggundu’s legacy, recognizing her achievements and the positive influence she had on her community, UWESO, and Watoto Church.
