Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has conveyed his congratulations to Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) President Felix Tshisekedi for his victory in the recent electoral contest, as officially declared by the country’s electoral commission.
In a statement on January 1, President Museveni expressed his felicitations on behalf of the Ugandan people and the fraternal relationship with the DRC. He highlighted Tshisekedi’s positive contributions to regional efforts, particularly in integrating Congo into the East African Community and collaborating with the Congolese army to dismantle the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) in Eastern Congo.
“We look forward to more brotherly cooperation with the People and the government of Congo,” President Museveni affirmed.
Tshisekedi secured a second term in office with a substantial victory, according to provisional results announced by the country’s electoral commission on December 31. Despite opposition leaders dismissing the results as a “sham,” the provisional figures revealed Tshisekedi winning 73% of the vote with a turnout of 43%. Moise Katumbi, a wealthy businessman and former provincial governor, emerged as the runner-up with approximately 18%.
However, nine opposition candidates, including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Denis Mukwege, rejected the election outcome, terming it a “sham,” and called for a re-run. They signed a declaration on Sunday, denouncing the legitimacy of the electoral process.
