The Genomics, Molecular, and Immunology Laboratories (GMI Labs), operating under Makerere University Biomedical Research Center (MakBRC), have recently obtained official approval from the Ministry of Health (MoH) in Uganda to perform DNA Paternity Tests. This marks a significant expansion of their diagnostic capabilities, reinforcing their status as a trusted institution for advanced genetic diagnostics in the country.
Situated at the Dept of Immunology & Molecular Biology under the School of Biomedical Sciences at the College of Health Sciences, Makerere University, GMI Labs have been instrumental in infectious and non-infectious disease research. They gained recognition during the COVID-19 pandemic, conducting nearly a million PCR tests and managing critical prevalence surveys that influenced the country’s lockdown strategies.
In a letter dated November 22, 2023, the Director General Health Services commended the labs’ adherence to international standards, proficiency in molecular biology techniques, and a proven track record in delivering precise results. This approval enables GMI Labs to provide accurate and reliable genetic testing for determining biological parentage, reinforcing their commitment to ethical practice, confidentiality, and accuracy in DNA paternity testing.
Prof. Moses L Joloba, the Director of GMI Labs, expressed pride in the team’s dedication and expertise leading to this authorization. The inclusion of DNA Paternity Testing aligns with their goal of advancing healthcare through state-of-the-art diagnostics, research, and education.
