Vice President Jessica Alupo and the devoted parishioners of St. Stephen Catholic Church in Katakwi, Uganda, bid farewell to their long-serving missionary, Rev. Fr. Remi Nyengere. The heartfelt send-off took place during a thanksgiving mass at St. Stephen’s Secondary School, where Fr. Nyengere has served as the Dean of Katakwi Deanery and Parish Priest for an admirable nine years.

The outgoing priest, known for his close relationship, dedication, and diligent service, has left an indelible mark on the Christian community of St. Stephen Catholic Parish. Fr. Nyengere’s impactful tenure came to an end as he embarks on a new chapter, having been posted to Arusha, Tanzania. His significant contributions to the spiritual, social, and economic development of the parish were acknowledged during the colorful farewell ceremony.

Vice President Jessica Alupo expressed gratitude for Fr. Nyengere’s unwavering commitment and personal interactions with the community. During the mass, Alupo remarked, “I want to take the honor to thank Nyengere for the close relationship, dedication, and diligent service to Christians of St. Stephen Catholic Parish.” She noted the emotional difficulty of seeing him leave and prayed for his safety and success in Tanzania.

As a symbol of appreciation, Fr. Nyengere received gifts from catechists and Christians during the ceremony. Vice President Alupo presented him with a cow, symbolizing gratitude and goodwill. She also welcomed the incoming parish priest, Rev. Fr. Olivier Wayesu, assuring him of continued support in terms of administration and church programs.

Highlighting the harmonious relationship between the government and the church, Alupo affirmed the government’s commitment to collaborating closely with religious institutions across the country. She praised the unity demonstrated by religious institutions and their contribution to the activities of the inter-religious council.

Fr. Nyengere, in his farewell speech, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from Vice President Alupo, Christians, and the community of Katakwi. Despite the emotional challenges of saying goodbye, he promised to keep Katakwi close to his heart and serve as an ambassador for the community in Tanzania.

Incoming Parish Priest Wayesu acknowledged Fr. Nyengere’s contributions and pledged to continue the legacy, building on the foundation laid by his predecessor. Superior Vicent Lubega appreciated Vice President Alupo for her friendship with the church and extended best wishes to both outgoing and incoming priests, urging Christians to offer their support.
