In Loving Memory: Businessman Nkurunziza Nelson Honored by Community in Rubanda District

Thousands of mourners gathered yesterday afternoon at St. John’s Rurembwe Church of Uganda to mourn businessman Nkurunziza Nelson. Nelson, aged 36, along with his two employees, Nsanzumuhire Michael, 26, and Niyonsenga Gideon, 27, died in a motor vehicle wreck that occurred at Rwarubaya in Muko Sub-county, Rubanda District, on Monday, February 12th, 2024.

The sorrow-filled mourners gathered at the church eulogized the late Nelson as a hospitable, hard-working, and humble man. Speaking to the mourners, the Muhabura Diocesan Bishop Rt. Rev. Godfrey Mbitse counseled parents to set good examples for their children to learn from. Reflecting on Mbitse’s remarks, it was noted that the late Nelson behaved decently, having learned from his devoutly Christian parents.




In his sermon, the Archdeacon for Kabindi Church of Uganda, Ven. Gad Nzabonimba, advised the bereaved family to put their trust in God, as He is the only one who can comfort them in their times of sorrow.




As he addressed the mourners, James Mbonye, the father of the deceased, delivered statements that left every mourner besieged with sorrow. He emphasized that late Nelson, being his first-born, never disappointed him, and consequently urged the deceased’s siblings to learn from his example.




Nsabimana Erasmus, the Nyarusiza Sub-county chairperson, memorialized the life of the late Nelson as one that every parent would wish their child to emulate.

Speaking on behalf of the deceased’s in-laws, Dusabe Geoffrey, a prominent businessman in Kisoro Municipality, narrated how the family was plunged into darkness by the loss, leaving them with deep emotional scars. He described the late Nelson as a man of integrity who always kept his promises.

Similarly, the Vice Chairperson of the Uganda Chambers of Commerce and Industries in Kisoro, Muremyi George, described the late Nelson as a man of exemplary character throughout his life. Muremyi, who was the late Nelson’s first employer from 2006 to 2014, reminisced about the good memories they shared.




Nelson Nkurunziza was born on August 3rd, 1987, and passed away at the age of 36. He is survived by his widow, Alice Nkurunziza, and three children.
