The government of Uganda has reversed its earlier decision and confirmed that Akii-Bua Stadium will indeed be constructed to host matches for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027.

Initially, in November, the government had committed to constructing the stadium in Lira City; however, it was not specified for hosting the AFCON games. State Minister for Education and Sports, Peter Ogwang, had stated that while Akii-Bua and Buhinga stadiums would be built, they wouldn’t serve as venues for the AFCON matches. Instead, a new stadium was proposed to be built in Hoima.

The decision to include Akii-Bua Stadium for AFCON 2027 matches came after reconsideration of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) guidelines. These guidelines require stadiums hosting the games to be within a 50-kilometer radius of an international airport and to have Five Star Hotels nearby.

Addressing the public in Lira on Thursday, Minister Ogwang announced that the construction of the stadium would commence immediately, with a projected completion time of 22 months, ensuring its readiness for the 2027 games.

Accompanied by officials from SAMCO Egypt, the construction company tasked with the project, Minister Ogwang assured the gathered fans and local leaders of Lango of the government’s commitment to seeing the stadium project through.

However, he clarified that while plans are in motion, the government is yet to finalize a formal contract and fulfill necessary requirements, such as providing a water source, power, and access roads for the construction company.

Mayor Sam Atul of Lira City urged all stakeholders to collaborate with the government in honoring the legacy of the late John Akii-Bua by ensuring the successful construction of the stadium bearing his name.

In Lango region, leaders and activists have been advocating for the construction of the stadium, expressing discontent with delays and changes in plans. The search for a new contractor began in March 2023 after the Chinese government withdrew funding for the project.
