Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has suggested that her predecessors might be behind the difficulties she is facing in her current role. She made these remarks during an address to Bukedea residents at Apopong Primary School during the ongoing National Resistance Movement (NRM) voters’ register update.

Amidst accusations and challenges, Speaker Anita Among addressed Bukedea residents about her determination to continue serving. She emphasized her commitment to representing their interests and advocated for support in the face of recent criticism.

Recently, both Among and the institution of Parliament have faced criticism on social media under the hashtag #UgandaParliamentaryExhibition. The allegations include misuse of travel allowances, corruption, and gender discrimination.

In her speech, Speaker Among hinted at attempts by unidentified individuals to reclaim the Speaker’s position. She questioned the track record of her predecessors, suggesting that their actions might have contributed to the current challenges faced by her administration.

While not explicitly naming anyone, Among expressed confidence in her leadership despite the ongoing attacks, attributing them to pressure from the LGBTQ+ community. She assured her constituents of her resilience and determination to continue serving effectively.

The Speaker vowed to resist any attempts to undermine her position and reiterated her commitment to representing the interests of her constituents. She emphasized her legitimacy as an elected representative and affirmed her support from both her constituents and the President.

In response to the escalating criticism, local leaders in Bukedea announced plans to petition President Yoweri Museveni regarding the situation. They expressed solidarity with Among and praised her dedication to serving her constituents.

William Wilberforce Tukei, the resident district commissioner (RDC), commended Among’s achievements and advocated for her uncontested re-election as the Woman MP for Bukedea district.

Support for Among was also echoed by a few lawmakers present at the registration center. They pledged to endorse her unopposed re-election as Speaker of Parliament, highlighting her dedication to serving her constituents.

The NRM district structure in Bukedea, as outlined by Hajj Arafat Oyo, the Bukedea NRM publicity secretary, comprises 336 villages, 152 parishes, and 16 sub-counties. Each sub-county has a committee comprising 30 members tasked with facilitating party activities and representation at the grassroots level.
