Former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Gen Kale Kayihura, shared his sentiments of frustration regarding the establishment of a Sacco similar in vibrancy to Wazalendo, currently managed by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF). Gen Kayihura, aged 68, who served as IGP from 2005 until March 5, 2018, expressed these feelings during the 18th Wazalendo Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at Gaddafi Barracks in Jinja City on Monday.
In his address, Gen Kayihura revealed his intentions to initiate a Police Sacco, yet encountered obstacles primarily from the directors rather than the lower-ranking personnel, who would have directly benefited from such an endeavor. However, specific details regarding these hindrances were not disclosed.
Gen Kayihura’s frustration sheds light on the existing Exodus Sacco within the Uganda Police Force, indicating a potential desire for a comparable initiative within the police institution.
During the AGM, Gen Kayihura also acknowledged his involvement with the Wazalendo Sacco and promoted his yogurt business, urging government support for his products, which he offered for purchase.
Lt Gen Sam Kavuma, chairman of the board of directors of the Sacco, expressed satisfaction with its performance, highlighting a surplus of Shs70.2 billion for the preceding year. He clarified that although the Sacco doesn’t generate profits, it manages a surplus, demonstrating financial stability.
Since its establishment on November 8, 2007, the Sacco has disbursed a cumulative total of Shs2.5 trillion, contributing significantly to members’ financial inclusion and independence. Col Joseph Freddy Onata, the Sacco’s chief executive officer, provided further financial insights, reporting a share capital of Shs240 billion and savings of Shs445 billion as of December 31, 2023.
Representing the outgoing Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Wilson Mbasu Mbadi, Lt Gen Peter Elwelu, the outgoing Deputy Chief of Defence Forces, emphasized the importance of the Sacco in fostering trust between uniformed personnel and the civilian populace. He warned against any attempts to undermine the Sacco’s success, underscoring its significance in enhancing the reputation of uniformed services.
