Michael Kananura, from the Directorate of Traffic & Road Safety within the Uganda Police Force, has released a report emphasizing the importance of road safety as schools reopen for the second term. The aim is to ensure the well-being of students, teachers, parents, and all other road users during this period.
The Directorate of Traffic & Road Safety is reminding all road users of essential road safety tips. They are calling upon parents, teachers, and caretakers to take responsibility for the safety of children traveling to and from schools.
Motorists are urged to observe the rules of the road, exercise discipline, and patience while driving. This is crucial in reducing congestion and promoting smoother traffic flow.
It’s advised to avoid distractions such as using phones while driving, walking, or crossing roads. Such distractions can significantly increase the risk of accidents.
For the safety of children, those below the age of 12 should be accompanied by adults when riding motorcycles. Motorcyclists are strongly cautioned against carrying more than two children.
Both riders and children on motorcycles must wear helmets at all times while riding.
To ensure children’s safety, they should be escorted or accompanied by parents or guardians while on the road.
Drivers are warned against overloading vehicles or engaging in behaviors that compromise safe driving, as these actions violate traffic laws and regulations and can lead to accidents.
Children are advised to use recognized taxi and motorcycle stages, ensuring they board vehicles with visible checkered bands to avoid falling victim to fraudsters. They should avoid boarding tinted or unfamiliar vehicles to reduce the risk of kidnappings. It’s also recommended to note down the registration number of taxis or motorcycles before boarding.
The message underscores that road safety is a collective responsibility. Collaboration among all road users is essential to ensure a safe and enjoyable second term in 2024. A toll-free hotline, 0800199099, is provided for any inquiries or assistance related to road safety.
