Three high-ranking officials from Iganga General Hospital have been arrested on allegations of forgery, falsifying documents, and causing a financial loss of over 150 million Ugandan shillings to the government. The arrested officials include Dr. Dauda Mugoya, the hospital’s medical superintendent, Ramathan Mugolofa, the hospital administrator, and Michael Isabirye, the hospital accountant. Additional arrests related to this case have also been made.
These arrests took place at Iganga Hospital, and the suspects were later transferred to Jinja City Police Station for further investigation. The operation was carried out by the State House Health Monitoring Unit in collaboration with the Uganda Police.
An anonymous official from the State House Health Monitoring Unit stated that the Unit was fulfilling its duties in the Busoga sub-region, specifically in the Iganga district. The Unit has been evaluating how human resources, finances, infrastructure, equipment, essential medicines, and medical services are being utilized in all health units within the district.
“At Iganga Hospital, the Unit, in cooperation with Uganda Police, took action against the medical superintendent, hospital administrator, and hospital accountant. They were detained in Jinja under case number GEF114/2024 for forgery, uttering false documents, and causing financial loss to the government amounting to over 150 million shillings,” the official explained.
The official added that the suspects were involved in forging the signatures of other government officials, leading to significant financial losses for the central government. Investigations are ongoing, and once completed, the suspects will face the Anti-Corruption Court.
The investigation also covers several other irregularities at the hospital. These include the establishment of illegal private rooms, irregularities in the deployment of nursing students, lack of accountability for medicines in various wards, forgeries related to fuel usage and management, and the issuance of 10-year contracts to cleaners despite the hospital reportedly being the dirtiest in the region.
Recently, during the State of the Nation Address, President Yoweri Museveni emphasized his commitment to intensifying the fight against corruption in Uganda. The Health Monitoring Unit in Busoga is led by Dr. Julian Nabatanzi and assisted by Dr. Brian Arinaitwe.
President Museveni established the State House Health Monitoring Unit to independently monitor and assess the delivery of health services across the country and to report directly to him.
