The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) began their national recruitment exercise on Monday, July 1, 2024, in the Karamoja sub-region. Local leaders praised the army for a new approach that included shortlisting candidates and meeting required quotas.
Maj. Isaac Oware, the UPDF 3rd Division public information officer, announced on Monday that all shortlisted candidates from Kaabong and Karenga districts appeared in person to join the force. This was seen as a positive sign of commitment and interest in the opportunity.
Col. James Barigye Rukundo, the leader of team seven and the 3rd Division Operation and Training Officer, spoke to the aspiring candidates. He stressed the importance of discipline, following instructions, and patience during the interview process. Col. Rukundo assured the candidates and district leaders that the interview stages would be systematic and transparent, aiming to select the best soldiers for training programs. He emphasized that the UPDF would maintain its high standards throughout the process.
Filbert Ocailap, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Karenga, expressed his gratitude to the UPDF leadership for their new approach to shortlisting candidates. He highlighted the official adverts and quota projections that provided clear guidance for the process. Ocailap encouraged the candidates to give their best during the interviews.
Meri Jino, the chairperson of Kaabong district, called for affirmative action to support candidates from the Karamoja sub-region, indicating the region’s need for special consideration in the recruitment process.
The recruitment team planned to spend two days at the Kaabong recruitment center, aiming to select 22 candidates from the 36 shortlisted for Kaabong district and 12 from the 14 shortlisted for Karenga district. The same process would continue at the Kotido center for candidates from Kotido district on July 3, 2024, and from Abim district on July 4, 2024.
Local leaders, including Kaabong RDC Capt. (Rtd) Chris Mike Okirya, were present during the recruitment activities, showing support and oversight for the process.
Col. Deo Akiiki, Deputy Director of Defence Public Information, noted that the recruitment exercise was ongoing across the country. He wished the successful candidates well and encouraged all interested individuals to check with their recruitment centers to confirm their shortlisting. The recruitment period was set from July 1, 2024, to July 14, 2024.
