President William Ruto firmly dismissed the growing calls from youth groups to dissolve his entire Cabinet and appoint new ministers. He assured the public that he is considering other strategies to address the issues raised against some of his Cabinet members.
In a direct address to the nation via X Spaces, President Ruto emphasized that he has already outlined several measures to tackle the challenges that have tainted his Cabinet’s image. “I will not dissolve the Cabinet because I am exploring different ways to address these matters,” President Ruto stated. However, he also warned his ministers against engaging in corrupt activities, making it clear that he is ready to dismiss any minister found guilty of corruption.
Among the demands from the protesting youth is the immediate removal of ministers implicated in corruption. President Ruto acknowledged these concerns but stressed his commitment to a more measured approach rather than a complete Cabinet overhaul.
Public Fundraisers Banned for Government Officials
In another significant announcement, President William Ruto has banned public fundraisers (harambee) that politicians have often used for self-promotion. He directed Attorney General Justin Muturi to draft legislation to establish a clear and transparent process for public contributions, particularly for medical aid.
“I direct the Attorney General to prepare and present legislation to define an organized and transparent public fundraising process,” President Ruto said. In doing so, he prohibited government officials from participating in harambee events. “No government officer will be required to participate in public fundraising activities,” he declared.
Government officials and public servants have been under scrutiny for donating millions of shillings at churches and various fundraising events while the government continues to impose high taxes to fund its operations.
President Ruto hinted at potential changes in his government, indicating that reforms might be on the horizon.
