The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has launched a comprehensive sensitization and documentation process for 148 senior officers, including Colonels and Majors, as they approach retirement. This initiative is being conducted at the Non-Commissioned Officers Academy in Jinja.
Brigadier General Emmanuel Kanyesigye, the Commandant of Jinja Cantonment, praised the officers for their dedicated service to the UPDF, Uganda, and the wider African region. He noted that their contributions have significantly contributed to the country’s peace and stability.
In his address, Brigadier General Kanyesigye advised the retiring officers to respect the authority of community leaders during their transition from military command roles. He encouraged them to use their leadership skills to support and enhance local leadership, promoting progress and avoiding conflicts with village authorities.
The Commandant urged the retirees to embrace this new phase of their lives with pride. He recommended that they engage in socially and economically beneficial activities, such as agriculture, which could help them effectively utilize their retirement benefits. By investing wisely, they can secure a stable financial future and reintegrate smoothly into their communities.
Colonel Deborah Nayebare, Deputy Chief of Pension, Gratuity, and Compensation, encouraged the officers to view retirement as a positive opportunity to explore aspects of life that they may have neglected during their service. She assured them that their pension payments are secure and tax-free, thanks to government provisions.
Colonel Nayebare also offered advice on financial management, stressing the importance of understanding investment principles, including where, how, and what to invest in, and the associated risks. She emphasized the need to master cash flow management and asset planning.
The event was attended by staff from the Pension Directorate and Mr. William Enyimu, Principal Human Resource Officer at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs.
