The UPDF Civil Engineering Brigade has announced that Mandela National Stadium Namboole is nearing completion, with the project currently at 95 percent completion. According to the contractors, the remaining tasks are expected to be finished by the end of September.
Lt. Col. Peter Kidemuka, the UPDF Project Coordinator, provided an update on the stadium’s progress. He stated that the final work includes laying the tartan track and completing lane markings. The stadium will be handed over once these final touches are completed.
Recent upgrades to the stadium include state-of-the-art digital entry gates, a modern VIP lift, and an advanced water system. Additionally, the floodlights are being upgraded to meet FIFA standards, with more than 40 new lights installed, each with a lifespan of 10 years.
Work on the stadium began in 2021, starting with securing the land and fencing it off. The renovation, which cost 94 billion Ugandan shillings, has seen some aspects of Phase II completed ahead of schedule. This includes improvements to the hotel and the roof of the stadium.
Kidemuka emphasized that the renovations have been carried out under the guidance of CAF, FIFA, and other international bodies, ensuring the stadium’s readiness for international competitions. Last month, Uganda’s hosting of the Rugby Africa tournament received praise for using one of the best facilities in the continent.
