Court Rejects Bail for Manager in Major SACCO Theft Case

(Kampala) – The Anti Corruption Court in Nakasero, Kampala has refused bail to Edmond Sajabi, the manager of Kakoba SACCO, who is charged with embezzling Sh500 million from the cooperative’s members’ savings. Chief Magistrate Joan Aciro made the decision on August 26, 2024, after Sajabi failed to provide substantial sureties to support his bail request.

Sajabi was formally charged with embezzlement on August 19, 2024, under Section 19 (b) (ii) of the Anti-Corruption Act, 2009, as amended. Embezzlement under this law carries a potential penalty of up to 14 years in prison, a fine of Sh4.8 million, or both. Additionally, those convicted under this Act are disqualified from holding a public office for a period of 10 years.

Alongside Sajabi, Leonard Tumuhimbise, an Information Technology officer at Kakoba SACCO, faces similar charges. Tumuhimbise, who resides in Rwobuyenje Cell, Kakiika Ward, Mbarara North Division, was granted bail on August 26. He was required to pay a cash bail of Sh10 million, with his sureties executing a non-cash bond of Sh150 million.

The prosecution, led by Chief State Attorney Nelly Asiku from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), alleges that Sajabi and Tumuhimbise stole Sh508 million from the SACCO’s head office in Kihindi Cell, Kakoba Ward, South Division, Mbarara City. The accused have denied the charges.

Asiku informed the court that investigations are still ongoing and requested additional time for the police to complete their inquiries. The case is scheduled for mention on September 16, 2024.
