LIRA, Uganda — The territorial police in Lira City East Division are searching for family members who allegedly tied 25-year-old Oluk Isaac to a tree and beat him severely at their home in Apikongo village, Olilo parish, Itek Sub-County, Lira District. This act was allegedly carried out due to claims that Oluk was very hostile towards his family members.
The report was filed at Abolet Police Station by Atala Agness, 28, the sister of Oluk. According to North Kyoga Region Police PRO, SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, it is alleged that on September 5, 2024, at around 13:08 hours, Atala Agness reported a case of assault on her and other family members by her brother Oluk Isaac. She claimed that Oluk had become hostile towards everyone at home due to drug abuse and addiction.
Later, Atala received a phone call informing her that her brother Oluk Isaac, now deceased, had been tied up by family members and was being beaten. She requested the police to intervene. Okema added that police officers from Abolet Police Post were dispatched to Apikongo village to rescue the victim.
However, upon arrival, they found that Oluk had been badly beaten and was in poor condition. The family members were advised to take him for medical attention, and the police accompanied them to Barr Health Center IV.
Upon reaching the health center, Oluk was examined, and his condition worsened. He was referred to Lira Regional Referral Hospital for further treatment, but instead, the family chose to go to a clinic where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
A case of murder has been registered, and statements have been recorded from the deceased’s father, other relatives, and clan leaders. The file has been forwarded to Lira City East Division for further investigation.
The family members identified as key suspects in Oluk’s murder include Oluk Samuel (father of the deceased), Ojuka (a close relative), and Atala Agnes (sister to the deceased), all of whom are currently on the run.
Other family members have expressed opposition to the deceased and have refused to allow a post-mortem examination to be conducted. Even the father has declared that no burial prayers will be held for the deceased.
The police strongly condemn this inhumane act of torture, which they believe cannot be justified as self-defense. They are committed to apprehending the family members involved, ensuring that justice is served. Such actions invite severe consequences, regardless of the deceased’s behavior.
