A Rwandan national tragically died in Kisoro District, Uganda, after choking on a piece of meat. Elias Nterivamunda, also known as Kanovera, aged 59 and a resident of Kamonyi village in the northern ward of Kisoro, lost his life on September 29, 2024, while dining with his daughter.
The Kigezi Police spokesperson, Elly Maate, confirmed the incident on September 30, 2024, stating that investigations were underway. According to preliminary reports, Nterivamunda had gone to a local bar with his daughter, Darafin Nzasabimana, who had traveled from Rwanda to collect school fees from her father. The two stopped at a bar owned by Beatrice Muhawenimana, where they enjoyed a local drink before heading to Bakundakabo’s restaurant to share a meal of meat and matooke.
During the meal, a piece of meat became lodged in Nterivamunda’s throat. Despite efforts to get help from nearby neighbors, he was already dead by the time assistance arrived. Police were informed, and officers promptly visited the scene to document the incident.
Statements were obtained from witnesses, and the body was transported to Kisoro Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination. The police opened a file with registration number Kisoro SD 14/29/9/2024 to further investigate the circumstances surrounding Nterivamunda’s death.
