Over 82 Million Shillings Raised at Fundraising Dinner in Preparation for Won Nyaci Eng. Okune’s Coronation

The Margarita Palace Hotel in Lira City was packed to capacity on October 12, 2024, as dignitaries including clan heads and city tycoons gathered for a colorful fundraising dinner ahead of the November 2, 2024, coronation of Won Nyaci Eng. Dr. Moses Michael Odongo Okune. The event, which will take place in Mayor’s Garden, Lira City, is expected to attract thousands of people from all walks of life in the Lango sub-region.

Dr. Morris Chris Ongom, of the Chamber of Commerce, addressed the hundreds of attendees, stating that the fundraising dinner was a sign of unity and a step towards a clear agenda for the Lango tribe. He announced that 32 million shillings had been realized in cash, with over 50 million shillings pledged.




Maxwell Akora Ebong revealed that Raila Amollo Odinga, the leader of the Luo people in Kenya, would be among the notable guests attending the coronation event.




Pre-event activities will include visits to Ibuje in Apac district and Got Ojwang in Otuke district, both in the Lango sub-region.




Eng. Dr. Moses Michael Odongo Okune, the incoming Won Nyaci, was gazetted in June 2024 by the Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development.

Willy Omodo Omodo, the Speaker (Won Tok) of the Lango Cultural Institution, emphasized the importance of unity among the Lango people and called for the use of cultural institutions to drive development for both the local population and the Lango diaspora. He urged people to remain focused and avoid distractions from those with divisive agendas.

The fundraising dinner was attended by dignitaries including Lira City RCC Lawrence Emmy Egole, Kole RDC Josephine Omara Olili, and representatives from the Indian and Pakistani communities. Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero, the Minister of Health, contributed 5 million shillings to the cause through her representative, Emma Okite.




According to the Speaker of the Lango Cultural Institution, several kings from other African countries have expressed interest in attending the coronation of Eng. Dr. Moses Michael Odongo Okune.
