Lira Police Dog Tracks Down Thief, Recovers Stolen Property

LIRA CITY WEST DIVISION – Police in Lira City West Division have recovered suspected stolen items belonging to one Onyii Brian, following a burglary at his residence on the night of 30th September 2025. The recovery was made on 1st October 2025 at around 08:00 hours from Akolodong Cell, Amuca Ward, Lira City West Division, with the assistance of the police canine unit.

According to SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, it is alleged that an unknown person broke into Onyii Brian’s house during the night and made away with several household items.

A case was promptly reported at Lira City West Police Division. In response, a team comprising police detectives, canine handlers, and uniformed personnel was dispatched to the scene at approximately 08:00 hours. Upon arrival, a physical assessment of the scene revealed visible barefoot marks, prompting the introduction of a police canine to assist in tracking the suspect.

The dog responded positively, leading officers through gardens, vegetation, and several homes—eventually arriving at a particular grass-thatched house located approximately 2 kilometers from the crime scene. Upon entering the house, police conducted a search and successfully recovered all the stolen items.

  • A pair of door curtains

All recovered items have been transported to the police station as exhibits. Statements are currently being recorded as part of the investigation, and the file will be submitted to the Regional Criminal State Attorney (RCSA) for perusal and legal guidance on the appropriate charges.

SP Okema emphasized that the canine unit has played a crucial role in several recent burglary and theft cases, leading to the recovery of stolen property and the apprehension of suspects.

“We appeal to the public to report such incidents promptly and to preserve the crime scene. This greatly enhances our operational efficiency,” he added.

This operation demonstrates the importance of police canine units as a force multiplier in the fight against crime in the North Kyoga Region.
