The Lango Students Association (LASA) has elected Akello Dolly Ongom as the Vice President for the association at Kyambogo University for the year 2024-2025.

The handover ceremony for both the outgoing and incoming representatives took place on Saturday and was celebrated in a joyful and colorful manner, with Dr. Bua as the guest of honor.

During his speech, Dr. Bua appreciated the Lango Students Association for its increasing efforts compared to previous years. He specifically recognized Otuke District for sending the highest number of students and encouraged unity among the students to foster the spirit of togetherness within the Lango community.

While addressing the media on Saturday, incoming Vice President Akello Dolly reported that over 700 students from the Lango tribe studying at Kyambogo University had already subscribed to the association by the time of compiling this article. Approximately 300 students attended the handover ceremony.

The main aims and objectives of LASA include:
1. Promoting unity among Lango students
2. Ensuring access to education in Lango
3. Providing guidance and counseling for depressed students
4. Assisting needy students, especially those facing basic challenges such as food and accommodation

She noted that financial constraints are a significant challenge and requested support from parents, MPs, and cultural leaders in the Lango sub-region, as students often face various issues that need to be addressed within LASA.

Akello also mentioned that they recently organized a porridge night that brought together several students from the Lango region, allowing them to share experiences, including those from Lira, Abia, Dokolo, Otuke, Amolatar, Kwania, Oyam, and Lira City.

She expressed gratitude to prominent MPs such as Government Chief Whip Hon. Denis Hamson Obua, Hon. Akena Jimmy Obote, Hon. Alyek Judith (Chairperson LPG), Minister Betty Amongi Akena, and Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, among others, for their continuous support and development efforts for the Lango people.

Reagan Ongom, the father of Dolly Ongom and clan leader of the Cabaokol clan in Nga-Kwiya village, Walela parish, Ayami sub-county, Erute North Constituency in Lira District, commended LASA members for trusting his daughter with such a significant leadership role.

Ongom emphasized that the younger generation in universities like Kyambogo, Makerere, Lira, and Gulu are the future leaders.

He urged them to encourage their peers to aim higher through education. He acknowledged the high cost of living but stated that education remains the key to a better life, as charity begins at home.

Reagan remarked that as parents approach the later stages of life, students (Generation Z) are at the beginning of theirs, full of energy to develop their clan, the Lango tribe, and Uganda as a whole.

Therefore, they must prioritize education as the primary stepping stone to improving their living standards in the future.
