(Sydney) – A Qantas flight made an emergency landing on Friday after experiencing a “contained engine failure” shortly after departing from Sydney Airport. The flight, QF520, was heading to Brisbane when it had to circle for a brief period before safely returning to Sydney, according to a statement from Qantas.
The airline confirmed that the engine failure was contained, meaning there was no explosion despite the loud bang heard by passengers. Qantas Chief Pilot Captain Richard Tobiano explained that the aircraft was able to return safely to the airport thanks to the quick response of the flight crew and ground staff.
Qantas engineers conducted an initial inspection and confirmed the failure. “While customers would have heard a loud bang, there was not an explosion,” the airline stated.
A spokesperson for Sydney Airport mentioned that it was unclear whether the emergency landing was connected to a grassfire that occurred on a nearby runway. The fire was quickly brought under control by the Aviation Rescue Fire Fighting Service, and investigations into any possible link between the two incidents are ongoing.
In response to the incident, the airport’s priority was to inspect the parallel runway to ensure it was safe for operation. “We will return it to service as quickly as possible,” the spokesperson added.
Passenger Georgina Lewis, who was on the flight, shared her experience with local media. She described hearing a loud bang during takeoff and later being informed by the pilot that there had been an issue with the plane’s right-hand engine.
Qantas has assured the public that its staff are well-trained to handle such situations. “We understand this would have been a distressing experience for customers, and we will be contacting all passengers this afternoon to provide support,” said Tobiano.
The airline also announced that it would investigate the cause of the engine failure. Affected passengers were rebooked onto alternate flights to continue their journeys.
