Wakiso Police Step Up Efforts Against Car Theft Network

(WAKISO) – Wakiso Police have re-arrested a suspect linked to a vehicle theft ring that reportedly operates across borders. The suspect, who had previously been arrested along with four others in June, is allegedly involved in stealing a motor vehicle that was later sold in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

In June, five individuals were initially detained by police in Kajjansi in connection with the theft. The suspects were identified as follows:

Suspect Name Age Occupation Residence
Matovu Kenny 30 Transport Manager Aliwala village, Aluu County, Congo
Gumisiriza Ismail 35 Self-employed Okawanda Namere, Wakiso District
Musimenta Ruth 22 Self-employed Kireka Bliz, Wakiso District
Matovu Frank 31 Driver Katooke B Zone, Nansana, Wakiso
Mwebeza Ivan 40 Driver Katooke A Zone, Nansana Municipality, Wakiso

The incident reportedly occurred on May 20, 2024, at approximately 9:00 PM in Seguku, Makindye-Ssabago Municipality, Wakiso District. According to police, the suspects hired a vehicle with the stated intention of attending an event in Masindi. However, instead of participating in the event, they diverted the vehicle, which was ultimately taken across the border and sold in the DRC.

Upon being alerted of the vehicle’s disappearance, police acted swiftly, leading to the arrest of the five suspects. The suspects were held at Nateete Police Station before being brought to court, where they were subsequently remanded. Despite being granted bail, one of the suspects has now been re-arrested by Wakiso Police as investigations into the theft ring continue.

The police investigation aims to further uncover the network’s operations and curb vehicle theft, especially in cases involving cross border sales.
