LIRA | Uganda – On a day meant to foster unity and preparation for the much-anticipated Ateker Festival in Soroti City, a shocking confrontation erupted at the Lango Cultural Center.
Clan leaders had gathered to finalize arrangements for the event scheduled later this month, but their meeting was abruptly interrupted by Awitong Dickinson Ogwang Okul, who has proclaimed himself the anointed Paramount Chief of Lango.
Ogwang Okul stormed into the meeting with an air of authority, insisting that he should lead the Clan Leaders in their preparations. However, the assembled leaders did not recognize his claim and firmly asked him to vacate the premises, making it clear they intended to organize the festival independently. In defiance of their requests, Ambassador Ogwang Okul refused to leave, leading to a tense confrontation between him and the Clan Leaders.
In a shocking turn of events, Ogwang Okul drew a pistol, seemingly attempting to intimidate those present. This alarming display of aggression prompted an immediate response from local police, who intervened quickly to disarm him and restore order. The situation escalated when Ogwang Okul cocked the pistol, further raising the tension. Once again, police officers stepped in, tackling him to ensure the safety of all those present.
The physical confrontation reached a boiling point, resulting in an angry mob of Clan Leaders launching an attack on Ogwang Okul. Fortunately, the police managed to extricate him from the scene and took him into custody for questioning. In the midst of the chaos, Ogwang Okul’s driver made a hasty decision to flee the scene, speeding away to avoid potential damage to their vehicle.
Despite the turmoil caused by Ambassador Ogwang Okul, the planning and organization for the Ateker Festival remain on track. Clan Leaders have confirmed to the media that the first group will depart for Soroti City on November 25th, with a second group following the next day. This ensures that the festival, which holds significant cultural importance, will proceed as planned.
As the dust settles from Sunday’s shocking events, one thing is certain: it will take more than a confrontation to delay the spirit and excitement surrounding the Ateker Festival. It should be noted that the Clan Leaders are resolute in their mission to celebrate their culture and traditions, and it seems nothing will stand in their way.
There is already concern, however, that the unexpected altercation could affect the smooth running of the festival. Regardless, the Lango community remains determined to unite in celebration of their heritage.
