In a surprising announcement by the head of state, conveyed through Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, several notable Cabinet Secretaries experienced changes in their roles during President William Ruto’s cabinet reshuffle on Wednesday night.
One of the notable changes was the reassignment of former Gatundu South Member of Parliament and outgoing Investments, Trade & Industry Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria. He had been embroiled in a contentious exchange of words with Deputy President Mr. Rigathi Gachagua, who publicly criticized Kuria for his remarks on the escalating cost of living.
Responding to President Ruto’s decision, CS Kuria shared a YouTube song by the renowned Kikuyu musician, Elijah Miller, titled ‘Ihinda Riakinya,’ which translates loosely to ‘When the Right Time Comes.’ The song conveys the message that God fulfills promises to His people when the right time arrives.
Approximately an hour later, CS Kuria posted a photo of Deputy President Mr. Rigathi Gachagua, highlighting the ongoing friction between the two. Kuria’s provocative statement on Twitter came after fuel prices reached an all-time high of Sh200 per liter on September 14, with Kuria predicting even higher costs, stating, “Petrol will be Sh260 by February 2023. Responsible leaders ought to tell the truth to prepare the people.”
These remarks, not only from CS Kuria but also from Dr. Ruto’s top economic advisor, David Ndii, who made joking tweets about tough times ahead, triggered criticism regarding the tone and sensitivity of high-ranking officials on social media.
In response to the reshuffle, some of Kuria’s followers connected his reassignment to his provocative statements. Meanwhile, others in the online community poked fun at him through various images and comments.
Mr. Gachagua, amidst the social media storm, emphasized the importance of leaders addressing citizens with sensitivity and empathy, rather than talking down to the people of Kenya, as they are the leaders’ employers. He stated, “It is insensitive to talk down to the people. You do not address your employer with arrogance.”
In light of Kuria’s reassignment, Ms. Rebecca Miano, formerly the Cabinet Secretary for East African Community (EAC), the ASALs, and Regional Development, stepped into Mr. Kuria’s former role. As of Thursday, CS Kuria had not updated his Twitter profile to reflect his new position. Some online users reminded him to do so and expressed their opinions on his performance.
